Blighted, Hollow
Blighted, Hollow
Porcelain, Blighted apple leaves dipped in porcelain and burned away
44" x 165" x 28"
2018

The monument is ripped in half to reveal a dark interior and surrounded by windswept apple leaves, dipped in porcelain and burned away. The leaves were collected from the apple trees in my back yard.

When we bought our house, I imagined these as full of promise for a harvest of fresh fruit, until I discovered the trees were infected with fire blight. Each year my trees flowers and begin to set fruit, then slowly everything shrivels and turns brown...Not unlike the American dream- the hope that many of have that by hard work and perseverance, we can have a prosperous life.
