Third Space
This body of work was commissioned for the third space program, organized by Arts For Learning, that transforms a commonly used area of a school, and the students’ learning experience, through the installation of a work of art created by an established local artist.
For this project, I was paired with IPS 19 Frederick Douglass in the Garfield Park area. I met with the students, shared some images of my work, and discussed their thoughts about nature, as well as some of the places they had explored and their experiences there. Based on the locations the students mentioned, I created four large shadowbox pieces that combine my own photographs from those locations, historic images from postcards and filed guides, and sculptures of objects that I noticed in those spaces. These four shadowboxes pieces will remain at the school as part of the IPS collection.
I also created a temporary installation using adhesive vinyl photographs and images for the walls and floor, and created two curiosity cabinets that housed a variety of collected and sculpted objects.
